The game was to mark the official opening of Iraklis' newly refurbished Kartatzogli Stadium. The home side got off to a good start with Signiori scoring in the eighth minute. Leeds found it hard going and they failed to make any impression with the forwards struggling to create and take chances. Their best chance of the first half fell to Matthew Spring after twenty-eight minutes, when a good passing move should have have been finished off when Hignett swung in a great cross into the penalty area, but Spring's header went wide. Leeds left it late to spoil the party and it came from a corner with eight minutes left on the clock and saw skipper Paul Butler head home the equalizer. Julian Joachim, who was one of three substitutes brought into the game on the hour mark, was lively for Leeds and came closest of all the strikers with a header that flew just wide five minutes after coming on. Joachim replaced Craig Hignett, Jamie McMaster replaced Michael Ricketts and Danny Cadamarteri replaced Steve Guppy in the triple substitution. Simon Johnson also replaced Cameroon trialist Serge Branco after seventy-four minutes.
